NFMC Junior Festival

The National Federation of Music Clubs provides a number of opportunities for its members. Every February, a Junior Festival is held here in Eau Claire. This is a non-competitive assessment of two pieces. There are no theory or technical requirements although students may enter these as separate events.

Students may participate in a wide-range of events including most solo instruments and many ensemble combinations. Categories are included for fiddle music and hymns. Students may enter improvisation or accompaniment. The concerto category gives an opportunity to explore the music written for solo instrument with large ensemble. (Note: For the festival, a second piano plays the ensemble part.)

Within the piano event, there is an emphasis on American composers. In all events, the student will progress through levels as prescribed by the handbook.

Participants in piano, violin, flute, or voice events who receives Superior ratings may go on to a state competition on the second Saturday in May. Trophies and (at the more difficult levels) monetary prizes will be awarded!

The NFMC also sponsors a composition contest with monetary awards. The deadline for this event is mid-January.
